There has been an overall increase in the number of plans offering some type of supplemental benefit applicable to their serious illness population since 2018. In 2019, the first year in which plans were able to expand their supplemental benefit offerings, a total of 507 standard MA plans offered one of the five supplemental benefits highlighted in Table 1 below, which account for approximately 11% of the approximately 4,500 standard MA plans in 2019. In 2020, 377 standard MA plans offered at least one of the five benefits listed below, or approximately 7% of the over 5,200 standard MA plans. For 2020, many plans will offer multiple supplemental benefits, in contrast to 2019 when no plans offered more than one supplemental benefit.” (Please note that none of benefits in Table 1 is transportation.)
