Both the opportunity and need for increased levels of NEMT designed to connect patients to opioid treatment programs and services is clear. The disproportionate impact of opioid abuse in rural America, however, makes both the funding and logistical challenges nothing short of severe. Study after study has shown transportation barriers to be among the biggest impediment to success in these treatment programs, with only Medicaid currently available to actually provide resources to pay for transportation to medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
