HIV-infected women in rural areas experience considerable barriers to treatment. Of 64 HIV-infected women in rural CA, 31.2% reported lack of transportation was a barrier to receiving care, and 32.8% reported physical health problems prevented travel to care.

Pilot survey found that 25% of low-income, largely immigrant clients surveyed reported having transportation problems that had caused them to miss or reschedule a clinic appointment in the past. Difficulties included unreliable local bus service, and a tenuous connection to a car.
