NEMT for substance use treatment was less common for the rural patients in this study. Substance use problems are not confined to urban areas; however, additional barriers in accessing treatment may exist. The percent of hospitals that offer substance use treatment services is lower in rural areas (11% vs. 27% in urban areas) and there is less federal funding in rural areas for substance use services. Further, there may be more stigma associated with seeking substance use treatment in rural areas.
